Miyako Tanaka, Koji Yakusho and Long Mizuma.

What’s it about?

Hirayama works as a toilet cleaner in Tokyo. He seems content with his simple life. He follows a structured everyday life and dedicates his free time to his passion for music and books. Hirayama also has a fondness for trees and photographs them. More of his past is gradually revealed through a series of unexpected encounters.

Why watch it?

Shot in only 17 days.

Argylle

Directed by Matthew Vaughn.

Who’s in it? 

Sofia Boutella, Henry Cavill, Dua Lipa and Bryce Dallas Howard.

What’s it about?

Elly Conway, an introverted spy novelist who seldom leaves her home, is drawn into the real world of espionage when the plots of her books get a little too close to the activities of a sinister underground syndicate. When Aiden, a spy, shows up to save her (he says) from being kidnapped or killed (or both), Elly and her beloved cat Alfie are plunged into a covert world where nothing, and no one, is what it seems.

Why watch it?

Vaughn cast Cavill because "he needed someone who was born to play James Bond and then nick him before Bond's studio did". Cavill was a finalist to play Bond in "Casino Royale", but was rejected for being too young (he was 22). The Universal Pictures logo is set in a golden argyle diamond pattern.

Komada Jôryûsho e Yôkoso (Komada — A Whisky Family)

Directed by Masayuki Yoshihara.

Who’s in it?

The voices of Saori Hayami, Kenshô Ono and Maaya Uchida.

What’s it about?

Rui Komada, the young head of her ailing family whisky distillery. She took over the distillery after the death of her father. Facing financial difficulty, a divided family, and the aftermath of natural disaster, Rui takes it upon herself to reforge her family's bonds by reviving the family's signature Japanese whisky.

Why watch it?

Masayuki Yoshihara's directorial debut.

Kamen Rider Faiz 20th: Paradise Regained

Directed by Ryuta Tasaki.

Who’s in it?

The voices of Daiji Asakawa, Rei Fujita and Rumika Fukuda.

What’s it about?

Masato and Mari fight against a new iteration of Smart Brain led by Kitazaki, who begins an operation to exterminate all Orphnochs, with Takumi seemingly working with them for unknown reasons since his disappearance.

Why watch it?

The film takes place 20 years after the finale, ignoring the events established in "Kamen Rider Taisen" and "Kamen Rider 4".

Mobile Suit Gundam Seed: Special Edition

Directed by Mitsuo Fukuda.

Who’s in it?

The voices of Brian Dobson, Brian Drummond and Adam Henderson.

What’s it about?

These movies are a complete recap and alternate re-telling of all 50 episodes of the TV series and were first shown on television in Japan. The Special Edition episodes featured some new scenes and tweaks to previously animated scenes. 

Why watch it?

The first "Mobile Suit Gundam Seed" compilation movie featuring newly made footage.

Pole Princess: The Movie

Directed by Hitomi Ezoe.

Who’s in it?

The voices of Anna Suzuki, Minami Hinata, Rio Tsuchiya, Yui Ogura,  Rie Kugimiya, Rina Hidaka, Saori Hayami and Yoshino Nanjō.

What’s it about?

A Japanese ONA series about pole dancing animated by Tatsunoko Production and produced by Avex Pictures. 

Why watch it?

The theme song, titled Starlight Challenge and sung by the talented cast of the anime, was out on July 26 in Japan.

Pâfekuto burû (Perfect Blue)

Directed by Satoshi Kon.

Who’s in it?

The voices of Junko Iwao, Rica Matsumoto and Shinpachi Tsuji.

What’s it about?

A pop singer gives up her career to become an actress, but she slowly goes insane when she starts being stalked by an obsessed fan and what seems to be a ghost of her past.

Why watch it?

The film was originally conceived as a live-action feature, but became an anime when several backers abruptly pulled out in pre-production.

Silent Love

Directed by Eiji Uchida.

Who’s in it?

Minami Hamabe and Ryôsuke Yamada.

What’s it about?

Aoi (Ryosuke Yamada) is a young man without a dream or hope in his life. An accident led him to stop speaking completely. One day, he happens to meet Mika (Minami Hamabe). She is a music student and wants to become a pianist. Due to an accident, she lost sight in her eyes. Aoi is attracted to her and tries to protect her from any dangerous situations. He conveys his feelings to her through the light touch of his index finger or the sound of a small bell. His basic, but genuine gesture changes her. With Aoi, she see is able to see hope through the despair, but something happens to them.

Why watch it?

In this complicated and muddy age, this is the most sad love story of this winter, gently holding up a transparent pure love.

My Next Life As A Villainess: All Routes Lead To Doom!

Directed by Keisuke Inoue.

Who’s in it?

The voices of Maaya Uchida, Tetsuya Kakihara and Shouta Aoi.

What’s it about?

A young girl dies and is reincarnated into a video game. But when she finds out that her role is the villainess destined for doom, she takes measures to change the game and avoid that fate.

Why watch it?

If you like boys over flowers.

Meitantei Conan Bāsasu Kaitō Kiddo (Detective Conan Vs. Kid Tthe Phantom Thief)

Directed by Junko Yamanaka.

Who’s in it?

The voices of Kappei Yamaguchi and Minami Takayama.

What’s it about?

Kaito Kid attempts to steal a US$1 million "big jewel" in Hakodate, Japan, as well as a possible confession between Heiji and his childhood friend Kazuha.

Why watch it?

Ree-edits of TV episodes including the debut of "Kid The Phantom Thief" and add new footage to the story in episode 76, when Conan and Kid had their first confrontation.
