Catch UK indie icons Ride in Bangkok

ARTS & ENTERTAINMENT

Since their pioneering days in the UK shoegaze movement in the early 1990s, iconic indie rockers Ride are set to perform in Thailand for the first time. Don't miss "#HYHBKK Live! With Ride" on Aug 5 at Search Studio, Ramkhamhaeng 81.

Brought to you by indie concert promoter HAVE YOU HEARD?, this show promises an unforgettable night as fans can expect to hear everything from Ride's classic hits to their latest tunes from recent albums.

Formed in 1988 in Oxford, Ride features the guitar skills of Andy Bell and Mark Gardener, bassist Steve Queralt and drummer Laurence "Loz" Colbert. Their initial releases Nowhere (1990) and Going Blank Again (1992) showcased hits like Vapour Trail, Seagull and Leave Them All Behind. These albums, noted for their raw, guitar-driven sound and heavy yet subtly melodic arrangements, earned critical acclaim as seminal works of the shoegaze genre.

Despite the success of their third album, Carnival Of Light (1994), which reached fifth spot on the UK Albums Chart, Ride faced challenges. Their fourth album, Tarantula (1996), was met with less enthusiasm, leading to the band parting ways shortly after its release.

In 1999, Andy Bell joined Oasis as their bassist. Despite a hiatus and no new releases, Ride gradually gained new listeners, continuing to influence the post-shoegaze era. The band's reunion in 2014 sparked significant excitement among fans.

After a 21-year gap following their last album, Ride made a remarkable comeback with Weather Diaries (2017), infusing their music with a fresh electronic twist while preserving their distinctive style. Their subsequent global tour featured hit tracks like All I Want. They maintained their creative streak with consistent album releases, including This Is Not A Safe Place in 2019 and the recent Interplay, released this March. Interplay captures the essence of classic Ride, blending energetic guitars, ethereal melodies, and captivating rhythms. Tracks like Light In A Quiet Room and Monaco draw inspiration from 80s pop sensations such as Tears For Fears, Talk Talk and early U2.

This concert marks a highly anticipated reunion for Ride, surpassing the length of their active era in the 90s. It's a rare opportunity for music devotees in Thailand to immerse themselves in the full-bodied musical experience provided by these enduring icons, who bring every performance to life with boundless energy. Don't let this opportunity pass you by -- catch Ride live on Aug 5 at Search Studio, Ramkhamhaeng 81!
