Korean TV series are constantly pushing the boundaries of storytelling with fresh and intriguing plots. A recent highly rated Korean TV series on Netflix, The Atypical Family, tells the story of the Boks -- a family with superpowers who unfortunately lose it due to a modern-day ailment.

Bok Gwi-ju (Jang Ki-yong) has the ability to travel through time to his happy moments, but he cannot change the past. Gwi-ju becomes a heavy drinker and depressed after his wife dies in an accident and his struggle with depression leads him to overlook his teenage daughter, I-na.

Man-heum, Gwi-ju's mother, can see the future through her dreams, but she suffers from insomnia. Thus, she cannot foresee stocks or lotteries like before. Dong-hee, Gwi-ju's sister, can fly but she has lost her ability because of obesity.

The series kicks off when Man-heum meets Do Da-hae (Chun Woo-hee), a pretty and well-mannered spa therapist who helps her have a good sleep. Man-heum appreciates Da-hae a lot and tries to match her with Gwi-ju. After Gwi-ju gets close to Da-hae, he regains his ability to travel back in time.

However, Da-hae is a con artist who works with a gang to defraud the Bok family. It is interesting to see how this fantasy romance will end. Due to its refreshing plot, The Atypical Family keeps viewers guessing about what is going to happen next.

The cast members are excellent in their roles. However, the scene-stealer is Park So-yi, a 12-year-old actress who plays I-na, an insecure teenager who does not dare look anyone in the eye due to her superpower. Viewers can feel her loneliness as the daughter of a father who focuses on the past and neglects the present. Moreover, her awkwardness when she is around her crush is adorable.

The two final episodes will air this Saturday and Sunday. If you like superhero plots, but also appreciate the human side of people with superpowers, you will enjoy The Atypical Family.
