Make your own soft toys using simple instructions

ARTS & ENTERTAINMENT

When Jackie Huang's first daughter was born, he tried to search for unique toys that were safe, durable and well designed. The hunt turned out to be disappointing as he only found cheap, plastic products, so he ended up making his own stuffed animals.

In just a few years, his Woolbuddies collection has grown to more than 300 characters. And so Huang, who is a former Lucasfilm animator, put 20 of them in Woolbuddies - 20 Irresistibly Simple Needle Felting Projects.

Woolbuddy characters featured in the book are organised by complexity - simple, moderate, and challenging. The simple ones are one-piece characters, while the moderate ones have limbs, and the challenging ones are the three-dimensional characters.

If you have an hour, for example, Huang suggested making something simple such as Pointy the Starfish. Or if you are ready for a more complicated model, such as a three-dimensional piece, try Hex the Octopus.

The book begins with an explanation about needle felting and tells you what tools and materials are needed to make Woolbuddies. For example, a felting needle is a must-have, while other materials such as thimbles are optional.

In the "Techniques" chapter, you will learn how to make some basic shapes such as an egg-shaped body, eyes, flat shapes or a clean line between two colours.
