Hungry for hummus

The new home for Middle Eastern fare

SOCIAL & LIFESTYLE

One of the greatest foods to be put into a bowl is the almighty hummus. It makes a great snack or dip and sometimes, even a great meal. And no longer do the Bangkok hipsters have to be caught dead on Sukhumvit 3 for their hummus fix.

Hummus Boutique by Mama Dolores has opened shop right under BTS Thong Lor, on the odd side of the Sukhumvit, bringing with them all sorts of Middle Eastern goodness. They even make Israeli quiches (B80) and flatbread outside the wee restaurant to tempt passersby.

Tabouli.

The two-page menu offers a wide range of vegetarian and vegan dishes in small and big plates. However, this is a healthy environment with no alcohol but amazing Turkish lemonade (B50) and fresh Orange juice (B80) to wash the goodness down. The lemonade is not on the menu, so remember to ask the waitress for it (insider's tip, wink). They also serve the other boring stuff like colas and water.

As in the Middle East, you order a bunch of stuff and then eat a little off each plate. No course-by-course here! I ordered Tabouli (B160), a salad of chopped parsley, couscous, almonds, tomatoes, olive oil, lemon and pomegranate; Tzaziki (B120), fresh thick yoghurt with chopped cucumber, garlic, dill and olive oil; the Falafel sandwich (B120), which is freshly made pita bread stuffed with falafel, salad, pickles and tahini sauce; Dolma (B180), marinated vine leaves stuffed with rice and herbs, served with homemade yoghurt; Chickpea brûlée (B220 for small/B280 for big), melted chickpeas with tahini and roasted tomatoes; Crispy memories (B220 for small/ B280 for big), crispy cauliflower and black eggplant chunks on a bed of hummus; and a Classic set (B160 for small /B220 for big), with salad, pita, hummus and pickles.

Too much food? Never. With so much tongue-pleasing stuff, it was hard to fault any dish and friends who saw my IG post about it and visited it the same day haven't stopped ordering from here. Yes, they deliver, too!

Owner David Lev Ari says Hummus Boutique plans to be a lounge, opening from 11am-3am in the future to cater to the after-party crowd. The tiny shophouse with an open kitchen has already garnered quite a fan following and is sure to be Bangkok's go-to place for all chickpea deliciousness. The proof is in the hummus!
