Let them eat cake

At the House Of Teaspoon, it's all guilt-free calorie munching

SOCIAL & LIFESTYLE

Everyone has heard of the saying, "Let them eat cake", made by a French royal on hearing that the peasants had no bread to eat. And dare I say, you will not be craving bread at this quaint café out in the sticks.

Despite being out on Phatthanakan Road, House Of Teaspoon is worth the trek for cake lovers. Seni Limpoon, a graphic designer by profession, has turned his passion for baking into a thriving business. While living in Hong Kong for four years, he became well-known for his cakes, which are solely made-to-order. Now that he's back home in Bangkok, he has set up a small café, which shares space with a design firm, so that more people can taste his home-baked signature cakes.

Housed in a Thai stand-alone house with a small garden out front, House Of Teaspoon offers cakes (which change weekly), scones, macarons (which change monthly), pancakes and drinks. Though the menu may be short, compared to other places, it is not short on taste and flavour, with everything being made in-house.

It was a hot summer afternoon when I arrived at the House Of Teaspoon, so it seemed natural to order the House special, Red velvet latte (B90). A mix of cocoa, fresh milk and cream cheese, topped with red velvet cake chunks, the drink while being visually stunning, needed a bit more cream cheese to bring it home, so to speak. A good pairing with this creamy drink, was the Toffee coffee nut cake (B65). A deliciously soft coffee sponge cake, double baked with cashew nuts and a coffee caramel glaze reminded me of the British classic, sticky toffee pudding. Even though I am not a cake fan, this cake made sure I became a convert.

The House Of Teaspoon's all-day breakfast is a sweet treat to begin the day. The Butter toast (B40) is housemade brioche, buttered and toasted, and I chose the homemade Sour apple caramel (B40) as an add-on. Yum! Of course, if you're into more of a savoury brekkie, opt for ham and cheese (B40), an egg (B20) or a sausage (B20) as add-ons. If plain ole buttered toast ain't your jam, try the French toast (B80) or the Pancake (B60), which comes with slices of green apple, a drizzling of sour apple caramel and a sprinkling of walnuts atop. To go with the Cranberry scones (B40 each), I ordered the Lychee rose soda (B90), a very rosy concoction of rose bud tea, rose water, lychee syrup and soda.

Have I whet your appetite for more? Fear not, there is more. We are here for the cake and more cake there shall be! The Lychee osmanthus jelly cheesecake (B120) wasn't what I was expecting. Satin smooth with a bit of a sour note, the fragrance of the osmanthus flower jelly worked well with the saltiness of the biscuit crust base. Delicious!

However, the icing on the cakes at the House Of Teaspoon that hot summer's day was definitely the Young coconut cake (B120). This is one of Seni's signature cakes and can be ordered whole, too (B900 for 6" and B1,200 for 8"). The cake is a coconut chiffon with a young coconut filling and fresh whipped cream frosting and piping. For someone (me, in case you're wondering) who doesn't like cake, the cakes at House Of Teaspoons were sure going down a treat!
