Based on groundbreaking research and technology, several top-of-the-range skincare products by four leading brands were presented at Japan Beauty Week Bangkok 2019, held recently at the Japanese Ambassador's residence on Sukhumvit 3.

The annual event was hosted by Shiro Sadoshima, Japanese ambassador to Thailand, and Tetsuya Kambe, international director of Japan Cosmetic Industry Association.

"They are the cream of the crop," Ambassador Sadoshima said of the featured products, specially formulated to protect the skin against environmental aggressors. The science and years of research involved in developing each formula was reflected in the event's laboratory theme.

Shiseido's Immunity Lab highlighted Ultimune Power Infusing Concentrate, which strengthens the skin's inner defences and helps prevent damage from UV radiation, pollutants and stress, while also addressing the signs of ageing.

Featuring ImuGeneration technology, the award-winning serum was developed following 25 years of research on immunology and uses botanical ingredients, such as reisho mushroom and iris root extracts, to support the skin's defensive ability. The skin, the body's largest organ, is a vital part of the immune system, the first line of defence against invading organisms.

Kanebo's Illuminating Lab presented a skincare collection based on its Chrono Beauty concept, which considers the impact of daily, monthly, yearly and lifelong biological rhythms on the skin. The beauty routine, accordingly, should involve changing skincare products to meet shifting needs as well as constantly changing real-world environments.

Two new formulas have been added to the Kanebo product line, to help cope with the changing living environments. The Illuminating Serum brightens the skin through Chamomilla ET, Carnitine and Illuminate Botanical Complex while the Global Skin Protector, formulated with niacinamide, prevents pollutant particles from lodging onto skin besides shielding UV rays.

Kosé also emphasised skin defence at its Multi Protection Lab. Its luxurious formulas are marketed under the Cosme Decorté brand, whose Multi Protection Sun Shelter was the star product at Japan Beauty Week Bangkok 2019. Updated with rosemary leaf extract and water, the multitasking sunscreen emulsion provides protection against UV-A and B rays as well as air pollution particles such as nitrogen oxide (NOx) and PM2.5.

The Reduced Wrinkles Lab featured Pola's medicated cosmetic product which is categorised as a quasi-drug, approved as the first wrinkle-improving formula by the Japanese Pharmaceuticals and Medical Devices Agency. It took 15 years of research for Pola to develop the Wrinkle Shot, based on the discovery that an enzyme released by neutrophils, which gathers around wounds, breaks up damaged dermis components.

After screening 5,400 compounds, its scientist developed NEI-L 1 composed of four amino acids as an active ingredient to combat wrinkles.

The product is designed with an applicator for applying the serum perpendicular to skin creases. The packaging's colour scheme, inspired by the concept of a space voyage to discover an unexplored planet, represents the brand's trailblazing R&D.
