Timeless mooncakes

Flavours for the Mid-Autumn Festival

SOCIAL & LIFESTYLE

Half the year has gone by and it's mooncake time again! Though the Mid-Autumn Festival isn't until Sept 21, it's never too early to pop one of these delights into your mouth.

The OG of mooncakes

Making a comeback after a year's absence is the legendary Peninsula egg custard mooncake. This year, the hotel is bringing back happy memories with a delicious twist -- their mooncakes are organic!

Hand-crafted in the Mei Jiang kitchen, each exquisite mooncake is prepared with sustainably-sourced organic ingredients. The Peninsula Bangkok's cherished festive treats will be prepared with rich, creamy organic milk from dairy cows in Nakhon Ratchasima, which are fed organic grass high in Omega-3. Organic butter is produced from the same nourishing milk. The Mei Jiang chefs also use organic eggs from free-range hens, organic flour and organic custard powder. These mooncakes are in line with the hotel's health and well-being programme.

An eight-piece set is presented in auspicious red with an elegantly designed octagonal gift box that features a lotus-flower motif, which is a timeless symbol of the Mid-Autumn Festival. The mooncakes are sold in boxes of eight as the Chinese word for "eight" sounds similar to the words meaning "prosperity" and "good fortune", which are popular good wishes exchanged between family, friends and colleagues during the festival.

The Peninsula Bangkok's Organic Egg Custard Mooncakes can be purchased from Aug 1 to Sept 21 at The Peninsula Boutique. An Organic Egg Custard Mooncake one-piece box is priced at B288, The Peninsula Bangkok's eight-piece Organic Egg Custard Mooncake set box is priced at B888 and a special limited-edition eight-piece gift-set box designed by Nirot Jarungjitvittawat, is priced at B3,888.

All that glitters

St. Regis Bangkok unveils its 2021 mooncake collection with exclusive new box design. The quintessential festive pastries are offered in four classic fillings -- durian, mixed nuts, lotus seed and red bean, each enhanced with a single egg yolk to represent the moon.

Each mooncake is individually packaged in a paper box, which when placed together, depict a classic festival imagery featuring lanterns, a full moon and rabbits, the companion of the moon goddess to whom the festival is dedicated.

As customary, traditional mooncakes can be gifted to friends and family in sets of four assorted mooncakes, presented in a specially designed box. Once the mooncakes have been consumed, the custom-made box can be transformed into an exquisite jewellery box. Wrapped in soft vegan leather, the pastel blue jewellery box opens up to reveal a mirror on the inside. The top layer can be removed to reveal an additional layer below with subdivided compartments, perfect for the safekeeping of precious trinkets.

St. Regis Bangkok Mooncakes are priced at B1,288 per box of four assorted handcrafted mooncakes or B198 per individual mooncake. Mooncakes are available at The Lounge until Sept 21. Early-birds get a 20% discount and free delivery for orders of more than 100 boxes, until July 21.

To the moon and back

Four unique flavours and a mystic moon lamp that doubles as a LED dessert tray, all packaged in an orange acrylic box for an easy and impressive gift for this Mid-Autumn Festival, is the name of the game at Kimpton Maa-Lai Bangkok.

Like the mythical character of the moon rabbit, the hotel acts as a guardian for all who wish to celebrate the festival with unique, unconventional mooncakes. The curated selection includes four flavours: durian egg, Thai tea, mixed nuts and cappuccino walnuts. Housed in a mysterious, orange gift box, the mooncakes are handcrafted.

The gift box features a spherical moon lamp that can act as a moonlit serving tray. While the moon lamp can rest on a wooden stand as home décor, the sphere can open in the middle and transform into a fancy platter for the mooncake. The thoughtfully designed lamp exudes soft sophistication and delights any family, friends or business associates.

Kimpton mooncakes are available at the early bird price of B1,888 per box (regular price at B2,288 per box) until July 31, with pick-up up at the hotel on August 9.
