To welcome the wintry chill to the tropical city, the Goethe-Institut Thailand presents its Christmas Market showcasing the charm of German seasonal traditions in Bangkok, on Dec 9 and 10.
Previously drawing many hundreds of fairgoers back in 2017 and 2019, the Goethe Christmas Market this year returns with more fun-filled offerings than ever before.
The 2023 edition sees a partnership between the cultural institute and many well-known German, Austrian and Swiss businesses in Thailand, including much-cherished restaurants, bakeries, chocolatiers, brewers, art vendors and other exhibitors.
Amid a shade-filled garden adorned with festive decorations and twinkling lights, visitors will find a wide selection of food and drinks as well as handicrafts, gifts and souvenirs that all speak to the spirit of Christmas.
Must-try culinary highlights include bratwurst sausage, döner kebab, German-style roasts and with sauerkraut, gingerbread, fruity stollen bread and the season's signature drink mulled wine.
To help add fairy-tale holiday magic to the scene, there will be caroling and music performances together with an extensive range of kids' activities and family-friendly entertainment.
"In that regard, German Christmas culture is truly unique," says Johannes Hossfeld, director of the Goethe-Institut Thailand. "If you look at the German word for Christmas, you'll understand that Germans value a sense of calm and reflection during the holidays. Weihnachten literally means Holy Night or Blessed Night, and this spirit of enchantment and wonder is best observed at a German Christmas market."
