The Royal Bangkok Symphony Orchestra Foundation will mark the launch of the newly-renovated B.Grimm Pavilion at Lumpini Park, Rama IV Road, with "Lumpini Waltz Festival" on Sunday at 5.30pm.

The event will be the first time the orchestra takes on a fully interactive performance of a selection of waltz music with the fantastic playing of over 60 musicians directed by maestro Charles Olivieri-Munroe -- one of the most travelled conductors who is now principal guest conductor with the Thüringen Philharmonie in Germany.

Waltz dates back to late 17th century Europe and its accompanying music is a dance music genre in 3/4 timing with long-flowing moments and rhythmic patterns. It typically features one chord per measure, with a specific accompaniment style.

The name waltz comes from the German verb walzen. There are even connections to the 16th century Volta. Classical composers like Franz Schubert wrote waltzes for household dancing in its early years. It has since evolved into many variations, from shorter waltzes to slow, long waltzes, with examples derived from popular songs like Ramona and The Last Waltz.

Johann Strauss III's most famous composition is Blue Danube Waltz, whose elegant and beautiful melody is regarded as one of the best waltzes ever written. It is considered by some to be the unofficial national anthem of Austria. Waltz music has remained an enduring expression through its unique forms and style. Held with the aim to present waltz music to a broader audience, the evening will bring dance instructors to help everyone learn the simple step box and pick up the rhythm of the music. There will be an entire sound system, lighting and a dedicated dance floor for them to experience waltzing.
