Four Bangkok restaurants make the World’s 50 Best Restaurant Awards 2024

Food city Bangkok did remarkably well at The World’s 50 Best Restaurant Awards, held last night in Las Vegas, Nevada, US.

Taking the coveted Best Restaurant In Asia spot is Gaggan, which also placed at No.9. Music, colours and creativity combine on the menu, which is anchored in progressive Indian cuisine, utilising French, Thai and Japanese influences.

Three other Bangkok restaurants made the list: Suhring at No.23, Sorn at No.38 and Le Du at No.40. On the extended 51-100 list are Potong at No.57 and Nusara at No.74.

The awards ceremony, held at the Wynn Las Vegas, honours the pinnacle of gastronomic talent from 24 territories across five continents. 

The World’s Best Restaurant 2024 and  The Best Restaurant in Europe 2024, is Disfrutar in Barcelona, Spain. An unbeatable barbecue from a Basque chef, Asador Etxebarri in Atxondo, Spain claims the No.2 position.

No.3 is Table by Bruno Verjus in Paris, where medical student to food critic to chef, Verjus implements his motto: “Our food choices shape our world”. In Madrid, No.4 is Diverxo, where hedonistic, creative and unpredictable are three words to describe chef Dabiz Muñoz and his menu. 

Maido in Lima, Peru claims No.5 and the Best Restaurant in South America 2024. Voted by his culinary peers, che Mitsuharu “Micha" Tsumura also took home the Estrella Damm Chefs' Choice Award 2024.

From Asia, the Highest New Entry was Wing in Hong Kong from chef Vicky Chen at No.20. Chef Chen is also opening a Bangkok outlet at Empire Tower this year. At Wing, chef Cheng celebrates China's heritage with highlights, including dry-aged crispy Cantonese chicken and house-cured century egg with oysters.

The Chairman, also from Hong Kong, was placed at No.26, earning it the Highest Climber Award 2024 after climbing an impressive 24 positions since last year.

Other Asian restaurants include Tokyo’s Sézanne took No.15, with Florilège No.21 and Den is No.32. Odette in Singapore placed at No.24. South Korean favourite, Mingles in Seoul came in at No.44. 

No.6 and the Best Restaurant in North America 2024, is Atomix in New York, US. An ode to India’s rich and diverse culinary heritage, No.13 and the Best Restaurant In The Middle East is Trèsind Studio in Dubai, UAE.

Argentine wine aficionado Pablo Rivero of Don Julio in Buenos Aires wins the Beronia World's Best Sommelier Award 2024. Legendary Australian chef Neil Perry, based in Sydney, Australia, takes home the Woodford Reserve Icon Award 2024. 

Janaína Torres, the Brazilian chef democratising the premium dining world, was crowned The World’s Best Female Chef, while Nina Métayer won The World's Best Pastry Chef Award. The World's Best Sommelier Award is presented to Miguel Ángel Millán, sommelier of Madrid’s Diverxo. The One To Watch Award went to Kato in LosAngeles, US.

Helping to rewrite people’s future through food, João Diamante, Jessica Rosval and Caroline Caporossi, have been crowned Champions of Change. From Berlin, No.43 is Nobelhart & Schmutzig, who also took the Sustainable Restaurant Award 2024. Serving up the world’s best hospitality, Plénitude in Paris, France has won the Gin Mare Art of Hospitality Award.
