After weighing up the pros and cons, the final of the 8th European Union Thailand National Inter-varsity Debate Championship is moving outside the capital Bangkok.

The final round of the 8th European Union Thailand National Inter-varsity Debate Championship will take place at Khon Kaen University on Oct 16.

Khon Kaen University and the Delegation of the European Union to Thailand will host the event, the biggest English language debate tournament among university and high school students in Thailand.

The final round of debates will be held on Oct 16 from 2pm to 4.30pm at Khon Kaen University and will be open to the public.

This will be the first time the tournament takes place under the patronage of HRH Princess Maha Chakri Sirindhorn and that its final will be held outside Bangkok.

Through its support for the debate competition, the European Union provides young Thai citizens a forum to practise critical analysis and intellectual debate while promoting awareness and understanding of the European Union and its policy priorities. At this year's championship, students will propose the topics for debate from a range of EU's priority policies in politics and democracy, finance and economics, the environment, science and technology, gender and sexuality, discrimination and differences, human rights and laws, to international relations.

The topic to be debated at the grand final this year will be chosen from the students' proposals.

Over the past seven years, the championship has developed into the largest English language inter-varsity debate contest in Thailand, with about 300 students from all regions of Thailand joining in.

Participating universities include Assumption University, Chulalongkorn University, Khon Kaen University, Mahidol University International College, Nakhon Ratchasima Rajabhat University, Prince of Songkla University, Thammasat University and Walailak University.
