Stand out in style

Make-up that breaks the boredom

SOCIAL & LIFESTYLE

Too many women today wear the same clothes, follow the same make-up trends and take selfies in the same angles. It seems like nobody wants to stand out. But it doesn’t hurt to attract attention (in a good way) from time to time by using edgy accessories or untraditional colours on your face. After all, being different can be so liberating.

There are many levels of out-of-the-ordinary make-up, from full-on Lady Gaga-style craziness to more subtle touches like opting for a colourful eyeliner instead of a black one. Here we bring you four levels of unusual make-up to try. Who knows? You might discover your true style through these “weird” items!

Step 1: Subtle

If you are a bit shy and don’t want to stand out too much, but want to play with new make-up items in unusual colours, the best place to start is the eyes. The safest step is to use a colourful eyeliner instead of black, as it will only be visible to those who are close to you. You are not likely going to draw attention from someone 10m away. Darker colours like bright blue and green, or metallic hues like silver and gold, are more traditional than yellow, pink or orange. The good thing is eyeliner is quite easy to fix — if you start to feel a bit self-conscious with the colour, you can always reapply a black liner during the day.

Try: Lancome Artliner 24H in sapphire adds blue-green metallic intensity to your eyes.

Step 2: Artfully hidden

Graphic eyelashes are just so much fun to play with, sort of like jewellery for the eyes. From a distance, they look like thick lashes, but on a closer look, your conversation partner can notice the intricate patterns on your lashes. You can also pick designs that match the occasion — Christmas, Halloween, St Valentine’s Day and so on.

Step 3: A little more eye-catching

Bright, colourful eyeshadows can make or break the look. The right colour will make you shine like the Sun, whereas the wrong colour can be, well, wrong. The intensity of the colour also plays an important role. If you are not sure about the colour, apply just a thin coat and see how the colour blends with your face and total look. Always take into account your clothes on that particular day — clashing colours is quite a tricky look to carry off. If the colour is bold, try to keep the texture simple. You wouldn’t want to walk around with overly glittery, bright yellow eye make-up all day.

Step 4: Going all out

Of all the make-up products you use on the face, your lipstick is the most significant one that has the biggest impact on how you look. Choose a crazy colour for your lips and you are guaranteed attention wherever you go. If you like Gothic, go for black lipstick and keep the rest of the face clean. You can also play with the summer trends and try yellow or baby blue lipstick, and match it with pastel eye make-up. Remember that these colours need to be reapplied quite often, until red or pink ones, which easily blend with the lip’s natural colour as they fade during the day.

Try: MAC Lipstick in Playland (frost golden yellow) and Lipglass in Bright Side (creamy yellow) give your lips a quirky twist.

Blurred vision

Kiehl’s introduces Micro-Blur Skin Perfector, a lightweight skin-smoothing formula that provides both an immediate blurring effect to visibly transform the look of skin in seconds, and an improvement of pores and skin texture over time. During the day, it is recommended to be used over UV protection and can also be used after a BB Cream. For night-time use, it should be applied as the last step of a skincare routine. In clinical tests, immediately post-application, the number of pores diminished by 14%, pore size decreased by 15% and average pore depth decreased by 9%.

Summer hues

Clinique unveils the latest set for this summer – A Splash of Clinique Colour, an array of make-up essentials that will make summer pretty, easy and fun. With this introduction, its Chubby Stick Moisturising Lip Colour Balm comes in more colours than ever. New hues for this season include Plumped Up Pink (watermelon pink), Supreme Sorbet (pink orange sorbet), Plushes Petal (shimmery nude) and Jumbo Jasmine (hints of purple).
