MUI dubbed a marine conservation leader
The Maldives Underwater Initiative was recently recognised as a global leader in marine conservation during the 20th Skal International Sustainable Tourism Awards following Maldivian President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih and his administration’s designation of six naturally unique and eco-rich areas in Laamu Atoll as Marine Protected Areas.
This award celebrates the team’s dedication to marine conservation through research, education and community outreach work. Their research has been presented at both science symposiums and government meetings to drive policy change. They have provided 199 children in Laamu with marine conservation and environmental education and brought 566 students from local schools on snorkelling excursions. Since 2019, they have had 26,000 moments of education with guests and certified 165 children through their Junior Marine Biology Programme.
The areas which have been designated for marine protection include the turtle nesting beach, mangrove and seagrass area of L. Gaadhoo (a neighbouring uninhabited island of Six Senses Laamu), the channel between Six Senses Laamu and L. Gaadhoo, the mangrove of L. Hithadhoo (an inhabited island on the other side of Six Senses Laamu), as well as two channels, a mangrove, a wetland and an island in other areas of the atoll.
Over 1 billion trips expected for Lunar New Year
The so-called world’s largest human migration period began earlier this week in China as the ruling Communist Party accelerates efforts to stem the spread of coronavirus in the run-up to the Beijing Winter Olympics next month.
This year’s 40-day travel season, including the Jan 31 start of the week-long Lunar New Year holidays, will last until Feb 25 but health authorities have called on citizens not to make trips unless necessary during the period called Chunyun in Chinese.
For the next 40 days, 1.18 billion trips are expected across China, up 35.6% from the same period last year but down around 50% from 2019 before the pandemic struck the country, according to the central government.
In the past, major stations and airports in China had been filled with people during the Chunyun period with about 3 billion trips made every year, but the number of tourists at such places was small on Monday.
In Beijing, residents have been required to present their “health code” on a smartphone, which can confirm whether they have a high risk of infection, in order to board trains and buses as well as enter shopping malls and office buildings.
Moreover, all visitors to the capital will be compelled to take a PCR test within 72 hours of entry starting Saturday, while foreign travellers to Beijing are still forced to quarantine at designated facilities for at least three weeks. (Kyodo News)
