Advice for tourists to Bhutan

TRAVEL

The Foreign Affairs Ministry has offered advice to travellers to Bhutan following the death of a Thai tourist who fell off a cliff during a monastery visit.

Ministry spokesman Sek Wannamethee recommended on Monday that visitors to the South Asian country buy travel insurance and check weather conditions and sites on their schedules.

The advisory followed the tragedy involving Narawat Bawornjirapat, who fell from the narrow path leading to Taktsang monastery on Friday.

The owner of Louie Crane & Transport Co in Pathum Thani province was travelling to Bhutan with a tour group when the accident occurred.

The tragic death of the tourist will not damage the tourism sector between the two countries, the spokesman added.

Bhutan is a new destination for tourists from Thailand. About 10,000 visitors from Thailand went to Bhutan last year, a leap from only 3,600 in 2013, after the country reduced visa fees, accommodation and plane fares for visitors to Thailand in 2014 to celebrate the 25th year of diplomatic relations between the two countries.
