By way of encouraging Thais to take an interest in rock climbing and other outdoor activities, the Thailand Mountain Sports Club (TMSC) will screen the award-winning documentary Free Solo on Friday and Saturday at SF cinema, CentralWorld.

Last year, Free Solo won the People's Choice Award for Documentaries at the Toronto International Film Festival and was recently awarded the Best Documentary Feature at the 91st Academy Awards.

The 96-minute documentary follows the extraordinary story of American rock climber Alex Honnold in his attempts to become the first person to perform a free solo climb (meaning without the use of any rope or safety gear) of the rock formation El Capitan in Yosemite National Park in the US.

In order to scale the 900m El Capitan without rope, the 33-year-old climber practised at several rock formations with different surfaces in Yosemite. He finally managed to succeed in his goal on June 3, 2017, managing the climb in three hours and 56 minutes.

Tickets for Saturday are still available at ticketmelon.com. Prices are 390 baht for a regular seat for one person plus one raffle ticket or 1,200 baht for one sofa suite for two people plus two raffle tickets.

Saturday's movie screening will be at 7pm. Please note, there are no Thai subtitles.

All proceeds from the event will be used to support activities at the TMSC.
