Police in Pathumn Thani seized 100 kilogrammes of crystal meth hidden in the boot of a car being towed from Ayutthaya province to Songkhla on Monday.

Pol Col Krisana Patanacharoen, deputy spokesman of the Royal Thai Police Office, said on Tuesday that the drug shipment was seized when highway police stopped a slide-bed tow truck for a search on Kanchanaphisek Road in Lat Lum Kaeo district, Pathum Thani.

The unidentified truck driver told police that he was hired to transport the "broken down" Toyota Vios car from a hotel in Wang Noi district of Ayutthaya to Hat Yai district of Songkhla. The driver had no idea the drug, inside tea packets, was hidden in the boot of the car.

The car had red licence plates registered in Krabi province.

The seized amount was huge and the seizure showed that smugglers were trying newtricks to avoid arrest, Pol Col Krisana said. Detectives collected fingerprints and would try to find the culprits.

Police estimated the drug's market price at 100 million baht.
