Police have detained a man wanted in South Korea on charges of operating an illegal online gambling network, with bets totalling about 2.8 billion baht.

Korean Kim Jaejin was arrested at house number 120/176 in Thana City housing estate in tambon Rachathewa of Bang Phli district of Samut Prakan on Sunday, immigration police chief Surachate Hakparn said on Tuesday.

He was detained at the request of South Korean authorities, who said he had fled his homeland two years ago and was hiding in Thailand.

Mr Kim was suspected of being the boss of the gambling business and had about eight accomplices, who had already been arrested in Thailand and deported home, Lt Gen Surachate said.

The suspect arrived in Thailand through Suvarnabhumi airport in Samut Prakan on June 27, 2017. His visa was extended twice and had expired on Nov 13 last year.
