Cool weather is moving into upper Thailand, with Bangkok expected to experience morning temperatures of 14-17 degrees Celsius from Tuesday to Thursday, forecasters said on Saturday.

The Hydro and Agro Informatics Institute, a public organisation under the Science and Technology Ministry, forecast a sharp drop in temperatures from upper Thailand to Bangkok in the coming week. The capital will likely see 17C in the morning, it said.

The European Centre for Medium-Range Weather Forecasts (ECMWF), an independent organisation supported by 34 states, predicts lows of 14C in the morning and daytime highs of 25-26 degreesfor Bangkok during the period.

The lowest temperatures are forecast for Nan province, at 5-10C.

The Meteorological Department said a strong high pressure system had moved into the Northeast and would extend to cover the North, Central and East regions on Saturday night.

Temperatures in upper Thailand including Bangkok will drop by 6-8 degrees with gusty winds from Saturday to Monday, it said.

The South, however, will see more rain and high waves of 2-3m in the lower Gulf of Thailand

From Tuesday to Thursday, another wave of high pressure from China will descend on northern Thailand, resulting a drop of 2-3C and strong waves and winds but less rain.

The Gulf of Thailand will see waves of 2-4m during the period.
