Five people were injured when a car crashed into parked vehicles and a group of people watching a fire race through a row of shophouses in Bangkok's Thawi Watthana district late Sunday night.

The crash occurred on Phutthamonthon Sai 3 road. A speeding car heading towards Boromratchonnanee road veered off the road and into the vehicles, according to Thai media reports.

The car hit a pickup truck belonging to rescue workers before crashing into a rescue van and seven motorcycles parked along the footpath. Five people were confirmed hurt.

The injured were among bystanders gathering to watch a fire gut a row of three-story buildings. They were given first-aid by rescue workers and taken to hospital for a thorough examination.

According to Independent News Network (INN) website, the car that ploughed into the others was another rescue vehicle rushing to help extinguish the fire.

According to local authorities, the fire began about 11pm in one shophouse and spread quickly to seven others. A parked Mercedes Benz was also destroyed by the blaze, which took firemen about an hour to bring under control.

No one was injured by the fire. Damage is being assessed and an investigation in to the cause is under way.
