AYUTTHAYA: Three ancient Thai-style wooden buildings inside Wat Senasanaram Ratchavoraviharn in Phra Nakhon Si Ayutthaya district of this former capital were damaged by a fire early on Sunday. Nobody was hurt.
Somsong Sappakosolkul, the mayor of Ayutthaya Municipality, said the fire broke out in one of the three buildings at about 6am.
The Thai-style wooden buildings were more than 100 years old. The temple, situated in the historic city centre in tambon Hua Ro, was built in the Ayutthaya Period.
Firefighters took about 30 minutes to put out the fire, which caused about 3 million baht damage. There were no reports of deaths or injuries as about 30 monks were collecting alms in the vicinity at the time, leaving only Phra Narong Pramote, a senior monk, and a few others inside the temple.
Phra Narong said he heard a loud noise from one of the three buildings shortly before the fire broke out, and suspected the fire was started by an electrical short-circuit.
Police were investigating.
