Strong winds have wreaked havoc in several northern and northeastern provinces, damaging houses and killing one person.

The Disaster Prevention and Mitigation Department on Thursday reported 1,000 households in seven provinces were affected by the overnight gusty winds that killed one person in Phetchabun.

It did not provide details on the death and the extent of the damage to the houses.

Other provinces affected by the winds included Sukhothai, Udon Thani, Sakon Nakhon, Loei, Nakhon Phanom, Nong Khai and Nakhon Ratchasima.

The windy situation will not end anytime soon as the Meteorological Department released another warning on the turbulent weather front, including rain, until Saturday, largely in the northern, northeastern and central regions.

Sukhothai was a hard-hit province by winds on Wednesday night, with five districts and almost 900 houses affected.

Teewika Kaewburi said she had to keep her one-year-old baby boy in a closet when gusty winds came to Ban Noen Thong in Muang district in Sukhothai.

She said she came out after the winds died down to find that they blew away the roof of her house. "It's something that I would remember for the rest of my life," she added.

Niem Koolpimai met the same fate when winds damaged her house roof and walls.

She said she and her three daughters woke up in the middle of the night when the winds came to Ban Puttra in Phimai district in Nakhon Ratchasima and had to escape to the ground floor.
