With the hot season now upon us, temperatures in several parts of the country have surged, particularly in the northern province of Lampang where the temperature rose to nearly 40C last week.

The Thai Meteorological Department (TMD) said the country will continue to experience high temperatures until the end of May.

In Lampang, 39.9C was reported in Thoen district last Wednesday while 38.2 was measured in Muang district the following day.

In addition, the haze situation in the province has improved since Saturday after several areas were pounded by heavy downpours last Friday, resulting in a drop of the level of harmful airborne particulate matter.

According to a Lampang-based air quality monitoring station, the levels of dust particles remain slightly above the safety limit of 50 microgrammes per cubic metre (µcg) in some areas.

The levels of haze particles were measured at 51µcg-70µcg across the province during the weekend.

Thunderstorms are also forecast in some areas of Lampang and other northern provinces, particularly Mae Hong Son, Chiang Mai and Lamphun.

In Bangkok and its vicinity, temperatures will continue to surge this week with maximum temperatures of 34C-36C likely, and minimum temperatures of 24C-26C expected.

Thunderstorms are also predicted in 10%-20% of the total area. No details were available as to which parts of the city are likely to feel the brunt of the storms.

In Buri Ram, villagers flocked to Pra Sat Thong beach to cool down in Nong Ki district over the weekend.

The beach is part of the Thung Kraten reservoir, a local catchment for tap water production in tambon Yoei Prasart.

It was developed by Tambon Yeoi Prasart Administrative Organisation which declared the place a new tourism attraction in January last year.

Various services including banana boats, water bikes, swim rings and life vests are available for rental there.

In the South, gusty winds and strong waves have forced boats to stay at shore along Khlong Praek Muang in Hua Sai district in Nakhon Sri Thammarat over the past weekend.

Local fisherman Pithanee Yotsurang said poor weather conditions would result in a lack of income among fishermen as they were unable to operate their boats due to safety concerns.

In tambon Na Saton of the district, villagers have yet to be affected by gusty winds.

However, they are advised not to go into the water and keep themselves updated with weather forecasts from the TMD.
