Cops arrest couple over B1.5m bank account swipe

A couple have been arrested on suspicion of stealing over 1.5 million baht from a bank account, in violation of the Computer Crime Act.

The couple were identified as Supawit Chainontiwat, 39 and Weeraya Khamphan, 34. They were arrested in Nakhon Pathom's Muang district. Mr Supawit is the subject of an arrest warrant issued by the Criminal Court on Thursday while Ms Weeraya is wanted on a warrant issued by the same court on Dec 25.

They face charges of theft and inputting false information into computer systems. Police also confiscated 400,000 baht in cash, 55-baht weight of gold jewellery, 18 mobile phones, 10 ATM cards and 10 bank passbooks.

Crime Suppression Division commander Pol Maj Gen Maitree Chimcherd said that a victim who asked not to be named lodged a police complaint saying more than 1.5 million baht was missing from his account. Police examined the money trail and found clues leading to the arrest of the couple.

They allegedly told police they previously sold goods online and had exploited the bank account information of past customers.

They tried random passwords to access bank accounts and said the victim's password was easy to guess, Pol Maj Gen Maitree said.
