PHITSANULOK: A woman was killed after a cement lorry ran a red light at an intersection in Muang district and hit a car and her motorcycle on Sunday morning, police said.

Pol Capt Somkiat Boonmeejiew, a duty officer at a police station near Naresuan University, said the accident occurred at about 8.30am at the Nong Or intersection in tambon Thapho. A cement lorry drove past a red traffic light, hit the rear of a Honda City crossing the intersection on a green light, and ran over a motorcycle following the car.

The car was damaged in the rear but the female driver, Jiraporn Khamhang, 30, was not hurt.

The motorcycle driver was killed. She was identified as Wanpen Kularbsri, 35, of Nakhon Sawan's Lat Yao district. The motorcycle was badly damaged.

Noom Netyarak, 31, the cement lorry driver, told the police that he was hauling 45 tonnes of cement from Saraburi province to Phitsanulok. He said that as he approached the Nong Or intersection, the traffic light turned yellow but he was unable to stop due to the lorry's heavy weight.

Police were questioning the driver. They found that the closed-circuit television cameras at the intersection had been out of order for several months.
