SAMUT SAKHON: A fire at a big seafood processing factory in Muang district caused damage reported at tens of millions of baht on Monday morning.

The blaze began about 7.20am at the Thai Royal Frozen Food Co premises in tambon Tha Chin, Muang district. At least 20 fire engines were sent to combat the fire, which was brought under control about two hours later.

It was believed to have started in a two-storey production line building, a preparation area for frozen seafood products, according to media reports. The building has a large stock of inflammable materials such as cooking oil and foam containers.

The building and machinery were reported to have been heavily damaged. The cause of the fire was under investigation.

The 10 workers in the preparation area when the fire started were safely evacuated. There was no report of injuries.

Black smoke from the blaze could be seen on Rama II road. Inbound and outbound traffic on the road near the Tha Chin river was congested as motorists slowed down to catch a glimpse.

The Thai Royal Frozen Food factory covers a 2-rai area in tambon Tha Chin, Muang district. It is one of the country's leading manufacturers of processed seafood products.

It is run by Ampai Harnkrivilai, president of Samut Sakhon chamber of commerce and coordinator of Thai Frozen Foods Association, reports said.
