Former prime minister Chavalit Yongchaiyudh, 86, has married for the fourth time, to a 53-year-old woman, with Thai media quoting him saying he had divorced his previous wife about 10 years ago.

Gen Chavalit admitted there was a new woman in his life after pictures of his wedding went viral on social media.

Media identified her as Orathai Sorakan. Gen Chavalit was quoted as saying he had divorced Khunying Pankhrua, also known as "Khunying Louise",  about a decade ago. His new wife was a native of Nakhon Sawan province and they had moved into their new house in Kaset-Nawamin area of Bangkok, he said.

The new wife had been close to him and taken good care of him when he was ill, Gen Chavalit was quoted as saying. He respected her and always took her with him to social functions, the former prime minister said.

People close to Gen Chavalit had seen Ms Orathai take care of him for about a decade. She had always been with the former prime minister, preparing his medication and taking care of him.

They had lived together for a decade but had just had their marriage certificate registered on May 19, shortly after his 86th birthday anniversary on May 15.

Thirty-three years younger than Gen Chavalit, Ms Orathai is a daughter of late Niphon Sorakan, a former senator and former president of an association of village heads and kamnan. Niphon had long been close to Gen Chavalit.

Ms Orathai said her father had known Gen Chavalit for more than three decades. Her affection and subsequent marriage resulted from a long-standing love and respect for Gen Chavalit and her intention to take care of him, not from any desire for personal interest.
