SUKHOTHAI: The body of a former Muay Thai star was found floating in front of a riverside temple on Saturday after he was swept away by strong currents in the Yom River early on Friday.

Kree Sangbuakaew, or Salakjit Thianhiran, 62, a former boxing star of TV Channel boxing show several years ago, was swept away while trying to get his fishing net in the river in tambon Nong Krajong in Sawankhalok district at around 1.30am on Friday. A search could not find him.

Police, rescue workers and local residents, numbering almost 100, resumed the search for the former boxer along the river. After more than two hours, the body of Mr Kree was found floating in front of Wat Koh temple in Sri Samrong district, about seven kilometres from the spot where he disappeared.

Rescue workers retrieved the body from the river and sent it to forensic police for examination before the body was given to his relatives for funeral rites.
