Weathermen predicted more heavy rain for the North and Northeast, brought by a depression over the South China Sea, as the flood-swollen Mekong River hit a peak level for the year in Nong Khai province on Tuesday.
Wanchai Sakudomchai, director-general of the Meteorological Department, said the depression had moved from the Gulf of Tonkin and landed in southern China about 7am. It was moving northwesterly and would degrade to a low pressure system.
It would spread rain over the North and the Northeast, with heavy falls likely in some areas. Mr Wanchai warned of danger from possible flash floods and runoff.
Chayapol Thitisak, director-general of the Department of Disaster Prevention and Mitigation, said that from July 17-24, tropical storm Son-Tinh caused flooding and landslides in 19 provinces and affected about 7,800 people in 145 villages.
Flooding caused by Son-Tinh remained in Kanchanaburi's Sangkhla Buri district and Tak's Mae Ramat, Phop Phra, Tha Song Yang and Mae Sot districts. Floods were receding there.
In the northeastern province of Nong Khai, the lMekong River rose to its highest level so far this year, at 10.24 metres, on Tuesday, 1.94 metres above Monday's reading. Officials closed sluice gates to prevent water from the Mekong River flooding up its tributaries in Nong Khai province.
