The cause of death in the case of two Thai students who were found in their Seattle, Washington apartment on Tuesday morning is still unknown.

The death of the students, 25-year-old Kornkamol Leenavarat and Thiti-orn Chotchuangsap was originally reported as a stabbing though few other details have emerged.

The scene is being investigated by Seattle Police Department murder detectives, and the King County medical examiner will determine the exact cause of death.

Seattle detectives determined there are no suspects at large, according to patch.com.

According to Seattle police, the building manager of their apartment complex first discovered their bodies when he went to the unit to check on the occupants' well-being.

Seattle Patch reports that the building, Malloy Apartments, is a 123-unit complex that houses students in studio and one-bedroom apartments.

Kornkamol's brother and a member of the Pathum Thani provincial council, Weerasak, denied reports that his sister expressed the feeling that she was unsafe when she contacted her family, saying security at her apartment was strict and outsiders were not allowed in without permission.

Kornkamol's uncle, Thanyaburi mayor Kritsada Leenavarat, said the Royal Thai Consulate-General in Los Angeles is in contact with US police investigators handling the case.

Mr Kritsada said Kornkamol called the family every day.

When they did not hear from her on Sept 1, they asked a relative in Seattle to go to her apartment to check on her, but they were unable to find her.

The student was the youngest daughter of Pawawin, former deputy mayor of Thanyaburi municipality, in Pathum Thani province. She was also a niece of the current mayor of the municipality.

He said Mr Pawawin authorised a relative who lives in the US to follow up on the investigation into the case and handle legal proceedings to bring the body of his daughter back to Thailand for funeral rites.

The father of Kornkamol is making preparations to bring her body back to Thailand.

Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Busadee Santipitaks said the family of Kornkamol has contacted the ministry for assistance and it is ready to help.

A web search reveals that Thiti-orn was listed as a director of Pornsiri Power Limited Partnership, a Samut Sakhon based company that deals in food products.

Pol Maj Gen Ittiphol Itthisarnronnachai, deputy chief of the Immigration Bureau, said Thursday that immigration records showed Thiti-orn left the country on Aug 21, and Kornkamol left on Aug 27.

Kornkamol had gone to Seattle to further her studies for a master's degree in law.
