KHON KAEN: A man was found hanged in a cell at Chum Phae police station in this northeastern province after being brought in to calm down.

Prasart Sutthi-on, 51, of Chum Phae district, was found dead at 7.30am on Tuesday. The body, with scratches on the abdomen, was hanged from the cell’s bars with a yellow T-shirt. He was estimated to have been dead for 20 minutes.

Prayad Sutthi-on, his sister, said Prasart had a mental condition and was on medication. Early in the morning, he tried to stab himself with a kitchen knife in the abdomen but the utensil was not sharp enough. His family asked the police to help calm him down and they took him to the police station.

When the family later came to take him to see a doctor, they were told he was found dead in the cell.

“His relatives did not wish to pursue the case since they believed it was a suicide but police will take all the necessary steps,” said Pol Col Saratyut Champhiew, superintendent at the police station.
