Prime Minister Prayut Chan-o-cha has asked people to wear pink on King Chulalongkorn Memorial Day Tuesday.

He said wearing pink is a way of commemorating the great king who is credited with abolishing slavery, reforming the bureaucracy and modernising the country's infrastructure.

The prime minister said religious events and ceremonies have been lined up, beginning with morning alms giving to monks, followed by a wreath laying ceremony at the Royal Plaza, and an evening candle-light vigil at the Sanam Luang.

Metropolitan Police Bureau deputy chief Pol Maj Gen Jirasan Kaewsaeng-ek said Uthong Nai Road will be closed from 7pm Monday until Tuesday morning.

The candlelight vigil will also prompt the closure of eight roads connected to the Sanam Luang, namely Ratchadamnoen Nai, Sanam Chai, Na Phra Lan, Na Phra That, Hab Peuy, Lak Muang, Kalaya Namaitree and Saran Rom. These roads will be closed from noon on Tuesday until the end of the evening ceremony at 5pm, said the deputy city police chief.

The MPB urged people not to drive due to the limited number of designated parking spots in the Royal Turf Club and the National Stadium.

A shuttle bus service will be available at the Royal Turf Club. Bangkok Mass Transit Authority will also provide free buses from the National Stadium, Hua Lamphong train depot, Mor Chit bus terminal, Victory Monument, Wong Wian Yai and the Southern bus terminal.
