SAMUT PRAKAN: A fire gutted an auto-paint warehouse in Bang Bo district around dawn on Wednesday, causing at least 4 million baht in damage. No casualties were reported.

The fire at one of the warehouses of Siam Luck Trading Co in tambon Bang Phriang was reported about 5.30am, said Pol Lt col Somchai Sakhon, investigation chief at Khlong Dan police station.

At least 10 fire trucks and crews were dispatched to the warehouse, as flames spread rapidly through the highly volatile paint chemicals stored there. Firemen took more than one hour to bring the blaze under control.

The warehouse was gutted. Damage was initially estimated at 4 million baht, police said.

Employee Meena Chalud, 35,  told police she and other workers sleeping in their quarters were awoken by the alarm system. At first they thought it was a water pump alarm, then noticed thick black smoke billowing into the air.

They rushed outside and saw flames shooting from the front warehouse. They tried unsuccessfully to prevent the flames spreading as they called police, Ms Meena said.

The cause of the fire was being investigated. Forensic officers were at the scene on Wednesday morning.
