Man hit, killed by freight train in Chachoengsao

CHACHOENGSAO: An elderly man died after being hit by a freight train on a railway track in Muang district of this eastern Central province on Saturday night.

Pol Capt Prasert Dejsupha, a duty officer at Muang district police, said the incident occurred at about 9.30pm near a railway bridge about 700 metres from Bang Phra railway station in tambon Bang Toey.

The man was hit by freight train No 846 with 30 carriages loaded with containers while walking on the rail track. He was killed instantly with severe head injuries and the left leg cut off at the shin.

He was later identified as Somchai Sosalam, 66, whose house by the railway track is only about 35 metres from the spot.

Police were questioning Udom Champasaen, the driver of the freight train, to establish the cause of the incident. Somchai's body was sent to Phutthasothorn Hospital for an autopsy.
