The State Railway of Thailand will start on Tuesday a new round of ticket booking for New Year's travel, with an additional 8,000 seats a day for trips from Dec 27 to Jan 3.
SRT deputy governor Voravut Mala, in his capacity as acting SRT governor, said on Saturday train tickets for all routes during the New Year's holiday had already booked but more were made available.
To serve more people during the festival, the SRT will add eight carriages to the northern- and northeastern-bound services, said Mr Voravut.
The carriages will be added to third-class train services to the two regions, with departure trips on Dec 28-29 and return trips on Jan 1-2.
The SRT will also add second-class air-conditioned sleeping carriages and second- and third-class non-air conditioned carriages to regular train services to the northern, northeastern and southern routes from Dec 27 to Jan 3.
Mr Voravut said the ticket booking for the additional carriages will open on Tuesday at all railway stations and online, starting from 8.30am, he said.
The additional carriages could accommodate 8,000 passengers a day. Train services could serve at least 100,000 passengers a day during the festival.
During the New Year's holiday, the SRT would suspend tourist train services for Bangkok-Suan Son Pradipat, Bangkok-Sai Yok waterfall, and Bangkok-Pasak Cholasit dam on Dec 29-Jan 1.
Passengers could call SRT hotline 1690 around the clock for further information.
