Man wanted for Trang pub killing arrested in Myanmar

A man wanted for shooting dead a person at a pub in Trang province and wounding eight others last month has been arrested in Myanmar.

Chaiyaphol “Khom’’ Siammai, 34, of Trang’s Palian district, was arrested at Tachiliek border checkpoint in Myanmar around 5pm on Dec 11, Crime Suppression Division police said.

The fatal shooting occurred at Mahanakhon@Trang pub in tambon Thap Thiang of Muang district in  southern Trang province on Nov 5. 

One pub-goer was killed and eight others injured. The dead victim was identified as Siriphol Taemprasit, 22, of Trang province.

Mr Chaiyaphol was named in an arrest warrant issued by the Trang provincial court on Nov 6 on chjarges of murder, attempted murder and illegal possession of a firearm and ammunition and carrying them in public and at a nightspot.

CSD investiogators learned the gunman had fled into hiding in Myanmar. They sought cooperation from Myanmar police through the Thai-Myanmar border coordination committee. 

On Dec 11, Myanmar officials manning Tachiliek checkpoint stopped a vehicle for a search and found the suspect inside it, along with two Myanmar nationals and three other Thais. 

A Colt handgun with 12 bullets and two Berettas with 24 rounds were seized from them. All six men were taken to Thachiliek police station.

CSD chief Pol Maj Gen JirabhopBhuridej has assigned a team to work with Myanmar police and bring the suspect back to face charges in Thailand .

According to media reports, Mr Chaiyaphol has a criminal record and was arrested on assault charges in 2003 and for attempted murder in 2017 in Trang. The outcomes in those cases are not known.
