PHITSANULOK: Two elderly Koreans in a golf cart drowned in the Nan River when a second buggy carrying their wives crashed into them on the club pier in Phrom Phiram district on Tuesday.

Pol Maj Chucheep Phumchiao of Phrom Phiram station said Jaseoong Ha, 76, and Jun Yong Sung, 68, were still in their cart when it was rear-ended and knocked off the pier and into the river.

The crash occurred about 10.30am after the two couples had completed their round and were returning to the clubhouse across the river.

The men arrived at the pier first and their wives, Byeong Ok Song, 68, and Oksu Kim, 71, followed them onto the pier in another buggy, but failed to stop in time. The men had no time to don the life jackets they would have worn to cross the river.

A caddie was also hit and fell into the river, but fisherman Chalao Photem, 65, quickly rowed his boat over and helped her out.

Mr Chalao said he was unable to reach the two men, who went down with their cart.

Divers had yet to retrieve their bodies.
