The government will invite Her Royal Highness Princess Maha Chakri Sirindhorn to chair a committee overseeing arrangements for His Majesty the King's coronation, Prime Minister Prayut Chan-o-cha said.

The invitation comes after the Royal Household Bureau announced on Tuesday that the King's coronation will take place May 4-6, with several ceremonies planned over the three-day period.

Speaking after a cabinet meeting on Wednesday, Gen Prayut said the cabinet has assigned Deputy Prime Minister Wissanu Krea-ngam to be responsible for setting up the committee and other related panels.

Gen Prayut said several preliminary rites will be arranged ahead of coronation day. No details have yet been revealed.

After the coronation, the government also plans a host of activities to celebrate the occasion, he said.

Appearing on TV Pool earlier in the day, Gen Prayut read a statement, acknowledging the Royal Household Bureau's announcement of the coronation schedule.

"The government welcomes this with great pleasure. This is an important opportunity for the government to join with Thais to make arrangements fit for His Majesty the King and in accordance with royal traditions," Gen Prayut said.

The prime minister said the government has been making preparations for the King's coronation for some time since His Majesty accepted the National Legislative Assembly president's invitation to become King on Dec 1, 2016.

Now that the schedule for the coronation has become clear, various committees will be set up to organise the events, Gen Prayut said.

Regular updates on their progress will be provided, the prime minister said.

According to the Royal Household Bureau, the coronation will take place May 4-6.

The actual ceremony will be performed on May 4. After he is crowned, His Majesty the King will grant an audience to royal family members, privy councillors, cabinet members and government officials.

Later that day, the assumption of residence ceremony will be held to mark the King taking up residence at the Grand Palace.

On May 5, a ceremony in which the King's full ceremonial name is inscribed on a golden tablet will take place, after which the monarch will bestow new royal titles upon members of the royal family. His Majesty will then take part in a procession around the palace, the details of which have yet to be revealed.

On May 6, the King will appear on the balcony of Sutthaisawan Prasat Throne Hall at the Grand Palace where the public will be given the opportunity to offer their best wishes to the monarch. His Majesty will then grant an audience to the diplomatic corps.
