Cops devise traffic control plan for ceremonial events

The centre to integrate traffic management for the coronation ceremonies of His Majesty the King will be opened on Thursday, while roads in the inner city area were closed to rehearse the events on Wednesday.

Police spokesman Piya Uthayo said Deputy Prime Minister Prawit Wongsuwon will officiate on Thursday at the opening of the centre in the compound of the Defence Ministry. Gen Prawit will also direct the centre.

The centre will coordinate with agencies connected to the management of traffic on roads to be closed during the ceremonies and for rehearsals in the lead-up to them.

Pol Lt Gen Piya, who is also assistant police chief, said the centre will supervise traffic control along affected roads starting from today until May 7.

The coronation ceremonies will take place from May 4 to 6.

The centre combines the work of traffic management from 40 state agencies. Yesterday, the agencies practised traffic coordination during the rehearsal of one of the key processions by state officials and military personnel.

From May 2 to 5, major roads near areas where the ceremonies are to be held will be closed to traffic.

Large crowds are expected to line the routes to catch a glimpse of the pageantry. On May 4, checkpoints will be established to screen people.

Motorists are advised to contact the 1197 hotline or visit www.trafficpolice.go.th for details about road closures.
