After fare hike, bus passengers demand better service

Most people are paying up to 100 baht more a week on rising bus fares and call on bus drivers and attendants to be more polite, says Nida Poll.

The National Institute of Development Administration (Nida) conducted its opinion survey via phone on 1,258 bus passengers in greater Bangkok from April 29 to May 2.

It found that 87.20% of respondents had to pay up to 100 baht more per week on bus fares, 10.97% were paying 101-200 baht more, 1.59% 201-300 baht more and 0.24% more than 300 baht.

Asked how they responded to the fare hikes, 46.74% said they boarded buses only when necessary, 16.69% said they were taking buses as usual, 13.35% chose passenger vans instead, 10.81% took electric trains, and 3.50% said they walked.

Over 50% of the respondents said bus operators should improve conditions and the behaviour of their bus drivers and fare collectors.

Asked to divulge their incomes, 26.71% said they earned up to 10,000 baht per month, 32.19% 10,001-20,000 baht, 18.04% 20,0001-30,000 baht, 6.76% 30,001-40,000 baht, 9.46% more than 40,000 baht, and 6.84% did not reveal their monthly income.
