More than a hundred Thai soldiers have been sent to take part in a joint Thai-US military training in Hawaii, a first for a Thai armed force at the company level to participate in exercises in the US.

Lt Col Akkhaphat Thepnarong, commander of the 29 th Infantry Battalion, led 130 troops from Kanchanaburi-based Surasri camp to take part in the Lightning Forge Exercise 2019 joint military exercise in the US, an army source said.

The exercise, hosted by the US’s 25th Infantry Division, is one of numerous multinational exercises and engagements that the RTA has fully integrated with in order to improve capacities.

Currently, the Thai troops are taking part in pre-training exercises, held between May 20-23, at Area X-Ray, Schofield barracks to standardise combat readiness before starting the joint exercises from May 28 to June 7, said the source.

The pre-training exercises included skills and standards in weapon training, calls for fire and close air support, life saving and other training to deal with all situations in both day and night.
