National artist Chalood dies at 86

Renowned sculptor and national artist Chalood Nimsamer died this morning at Siriraj Hospital. He was 86.

Manager Online reported the death of the Thai national artists in the field of visual arts. Born May 2, 1929 in Thonburi, Chalood was one of the first students of Silpa Bhirasri, formerly Corrado Feroci, an Italian-born sculptor who was considered the father of modern art in Thailand and was instrumental in the founding of today's Silpakorn University.

He received a bachelor's degree from Silpakorn University, Bangkok; a Diploma in fine arts from Accademia di Belle Arti in Italy; and a certificate in lithography from the Pratt Graphic Center in New York.

Chalood was famous for his many artworks. He also received many prestigious awards. He was named a national artist in 1998.

He participated in numerous art exhibitions in Thailand and aboard, the last one being Chalood's mural paintings between May 31-Aug 18, 2013 at the Bangkok Arts and Cultural Centre.
