Thaksin Shinawatra has called on public prosecutors to treat him fairly and reconsider their decision to indict the former prime minister on a lese majeste charge.
Lawyer Chokdee Angkaew submitted a letter on Thaksin's behalf to attorney-general Khemchai Chutiwongs on Thursday seeking justice in the case.
The letter asked prosecutors to reconsider their indictment decision and at the least question more witnesses.
Prayut Petchkhun, the deputy spokesman for the attorney-general and one of the two officials who received the letter from the lawyer, said the former prime minister had the right to seek fairness. The letter would be forwarded to the prosecution chief, he added.
Soon after taking up his new position at the beginning of this month, Mr Khemchai revealed that his office had decided to indict Thaksin on a lese majeste charge and review other pending criminal cases.
The lese majeste charge relates to remarks Thaksin made during an interview with Choson Ilbo newspaper in Seoul, South Korea, on May 20, 2015. He claimed that privy councillors were behind the military coup on May 22, 2014 that unseated the Pheu Thai-led government.
Thaksin was also accused of violating the Computer Crime Act in the same case.
