Watana: Another ruling awaits

Retired engineer Watana Pumret, earlier convicted for last year's Phramongkutklao Hospital blast, was yesterday given an additional jail term of 26 years and six months in another bomb attack case.

According to the ruling handed down by the Criminal Court, Watana assembled a bomb at his home in Bang Khen district on Sept 27-30 last year, which he then planted in a public telephone booth outside the army's headquarters on Ratchadamnoen Nok Avenue in Phra Nakhon.

The bomb went off about half an hour later severely injuring Pol Sen Sgt Maj Jiradech Atthaphong and Pol Cpl Wicha Tharasunthon, said the ruling.

Watana, who has been imprisoned on five previous occasions for bombing-related crimes, including the May 22, 2017 bombing at Phramongkutklao Hospital, was yesterday brought to hear the latest ruling at the court on Ratchadaphisek Road.

He admitted all charges pressed against him over the Sept 27-30, 2007 attack, said the ruling.

With rulings in six cases having been handed down, Watana faces a total prison term of 111 years and six months and there is still one more case awaiting a ruling in the lower court.

In the seventh case, he was indicted on Oct 6 last year for allegedly planting a bomb on May 5, 2007 near a telephone booth on Soi Rajavithi 24 in Dusit district of Bangkok.

The bomb went off and injured one victim.

Aside from the latest ruling, Watana's other convictions were for a case ruled on in Dec 6 last year, in which he was given 27 years for carrying a bomb in public and causing severe injuries to others; the bomb attack outside the now-defunct office of the Government Lottery Office on Ratchadamnoen Klang Avenue in April last year resulting in three injuries.

Others were the blast in front of the National Theatre in the same district in May last year leaving two people injured; and the 2007 bombing outside the Major Cineplex in Ratchayothin in Chatuchak district in which there were no injuries.
