Tewan Liptapanlop was elected to lead the recently registered Chartpattana Party on Wednesday, and the new frontman immediately announced a willingness to compromise with other parties.

The younger brother of Suwat Liptapanlop was the only candidate for the job at the party's general assembly meeting, which also appointed Olympic taekwondo bronze medallist Yaowapa Burapolchai the party's spokeswoman.

Mr Tewan said he would convince former leaders Suwat and Wannarat Charnnukul to serve as his advisors, because of his "young experience" in politics.

The new leader said the party will follow the trademark motto of late prime minister Chatichai Choonhavan, who always said "no problem" when asked by the media about problems he encountered during his premiership tenure.

"The Chartpattana Party will stay on the middle path and show a willingness to compromise, so it can be friends with other parties and avoid conflict," he said.

Mr Suwat became close to the late Gen Chatichai after the former Nakhon Ratchasima MP joined his Chart Thai Party. Mr Suwat later left the now defunct Chart Thai to form Chartpattana.

Chartpattana's political stronghold is in Nakhon Ratchasima and Mr Tewan said he will field election candidates in all constituencies of the northeastern province, to protect its main voting base.
