Privy Council president and statesman Prem Tinsulanonda yesterday gave assurances that the Prayut government is not corrupt as he opened his residence to welcome Songkran well-wishers.

Gen Prem was speaking as Gen Prayut Chan-o-cha led cabinet ministers and armed forces leaders and the national police chief to pay their respects at his Si Sao Thewes residence and ask for his blessings to mark the traditional Thai New Year.

"I can say with full confidence the government of the prime minister is not corrupt, because they truly work for the people in general. Honest people must have a broad vision and work for other people, not for themselves or protect relatives close to them," Gen Prem said.

Gen Prem called Gen Prayut his beloved friend. He in turn gave his Songkran wishes to Gen Prayut's delegation. Gen Prem thanked his guests for their best wishes and stressed the need for all involved to help preserve Thai culture. "I once said preserving cultural identity is tantamount to protecting the nation. I want to remind the prime minister of this again,'' Gen Prem said.

Gen Prayut led his delegation in paying respects by pouring water on Gen Prem's hands. The prime minister spoke highly of Gen Prem, saying his delegation felt secure and happy whenever they met Gen Prem. "Gen Prem is still in good health and has been able to give advice to us," Gen Prayut said.

The prime minister said his delegation had developed good ties with each other since their time in military school, and they remained determined to work for the nation, religion and the monarchy.

Gen Prem also greeted Deputy Prime Minister Prawit Wongsuwon who was also among the well-wishers. Earlier, there was a report Gen Prawit would not show up due to health concerns. "I heard that you are unwell. What's wrong with your hand," Gen Prem asked.

Gen Prawit did not reply but showed his hand which was wrapped in bandages. Gen Prem also extended moral support to army chief Gen Apirat Kongsompong. "Don't pay attention to criticism. Just concentrate on your work," Gen Prem said.

Last Tuesday, Gen Apirat stepped out to attack "left wing politicians" for trying to change the constitutional monarchy and divide the people. This drew criticism from opponents.
