'White shirts' free balloons to back vote

About 300 people gathered at the National Stadium BTS station and released balloons yesterday to show their support for the Feb 2 election.

The rally, organised by a group called ANTs' POWER, met about 2pm and massed around the station, where they let the white balloons go.

Most of the participants wore white tops and repeatedly chanted: "We want the election".

They dispersed after about 30 minutes.

The group said later they would hold more gatherings to express their collective wish for the election to go ahead.

It is also calling for effective scrutiny of politicians.

Though they do not believe the election is the be all and end all of democracy, the group's supporters said they certainly believed the Feb 2 poll would reduce the current political conflicts.

Many people disagree with the anti-government groups currently causing political turmoil and want to make a stand, it said.

However, the group said it does not intend to become another movement to participate in the dispute.

It merely wants the Feb 2 election to go ahead, the group said, as the poll's supporters believe the vote would calm tensions.

The group's coordinator, who identified himself as Pu, said ANT's POWER is a gathering of people who have the same opinion _ they want the poll _ but do not want to confront other groups which have different opinion.

They contact each other via social media and try to avoid any activity which might put them at risk of confrontation.
