NAKHON SI THAMMARAT: Security has been stepped up after a series of homemade bombs exploded in Satun and Phatthalung provinces on Saturday night and Sunday morning.

Chamroen Tippayapongthada, the provincial governor, said he had issued an urgent order for all 23 districts in the province to step up security measures at government installations, tourist attractions, shopping centres and all mass transport systems.

Emphasis has been placed on Wat Phra Mahathat Voramahaviharn in Muang district, where the pagoda attracts many Buddhists and tourists throughout the year.

Mr Chamroen said the province has adjusted its security plan to prepare for unforeseen events, especially at high-risk spots.

Security personnel have also stepped up vigilance and readiness for possible violent incidents, he added.

Officials say southern Muslim insurgents usually focus their activities in three southern border provinces - Pattani, Yala and Narathiwat. The bombings in nearby Satun and Phatthalung were considered unusual.
