Swiss player Viktorija Golubic stunned second seed Evgeniya Rodina of Russia 6-1, 6-1 to book a place in the quarter-finals of the WTA EA Hua Hin Championship yesterday.
World No.128 Golubic, who wasn't seeded for the event, comfortably beat the 83rd-ranked Russian who made a lot of unforced errors.
Golubic will next face Thailand's top player Luksika Kumkhum or Yanina Wickmayer of Belgium.
No.112 Wickmayer beat former world No.2 Vera Zvonareva of Russia 7-6 (7/4), 6-3 in the last-32 round on Tuesday night. Zvonareva, 33, is now ranked 204 in the world.
Fourth seed Hsieh Su-wei of Taiwan also reached the last eight after beating Marie Bouzkova of the Czech Republic 6-4, 6-1.
The world No.96 Taiwanese had few problems against the Czech at True Arena in the resort town of Hua Hin.
The event ends on Sunday.
FEDERER FACES ZVEREV
Six-time champion Roger Federer was paired in the same group as German debutant Alexander Zverev for next week's ATP Tour Finals when the draw was made in host city London yesterday.
World No.1 Rafael Nadal, who is hoping to recover from a knee injury to play in the season-ending showpiece, heads the other group and will face Belgian David Goffin, Bulgarian debutant Grigor Dimitrov and Austrian Dominic Thiem.
Also in the Pete Sampras group with Federer are Croatian Marin Cilic, the man he beat in this year's Wimbledon final, and American Jack Sock who crept into the event after winning the Paris Masters.
Zverev, 20, has taken men's tennis by storm this year, rocketing up to No.3 in the world rankings after winning five titles.
