LONDON: Arsenal secured their first north London derby victory over Tottenham Hotspur in seven attempts with a 2-0 Premier League win at Emirates Stadium on Saturday.

The hosts took the lead on 36 minutes when Shkodran Mustafi, on his return from injury, met Mesut Ozil’s free-kick with a towering header. The Gunners doubled their lead five minutes later when Alexis Sanchez controlled Alexandre Lacazette’s low centre and fired high into Hugo Lloris’s net.

In the second half Sanchez was thwarted by the feet of Lloris, while at the other end Petr Cech denied Eric Dier before Spurs' Son Heung-min fired over the crossbar late in the contest.

The victory moves Arsenal into fifth place, level with Chelsea on points but behind on goal difference. The Blues are at West Brom later on Saturday. Spurs remain in third place but could lose ground if Chelsea win.

Arsenal entered the match on their longest-ever winless run against Spurs, having drawn four and lost two of the last six league matches against them.
